National Film & Television School

First established in 1971, the National Film and Television School (NFTS) has evolved to become a leading global institution, developing some of Britain and the world’s top creative talent. It is widely acknowledged to be the top school of its kind in the UK and one of the best internationally. In 2018, the NFTS was awarded both the BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. With a graduate employment rate over 90%, the NFTS runs more behind-the-camera courses than any other film school in the world, as well as numerous short courses. These include core craft areas such as directing and cinematography, in addition to specialisms including games design and development, script supervision and production accounting. Supported by key industry partnerships, students benefit from world class tuition, top facilities and an outstanding programme of exclusive Masterclasses. All courses are designed to equip students with the essential skills needed to make an impact in the film, television and games industries as soon as they graduate. The main NFTS site is based in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire and also has regional hubs operating in London’s Golden Square, Glasgow, Leeds and Cardiff. NFTS alumni have gone on to win 14 Oscars, 165 BAFTAs and 15 Emmys with graduates including; Oscar winning cinematographer Roger Deakins (1917), Laurie Nunn, creator of global Netflix hit Sex Education, award winning writer/director Joanna Hogg (The Souvenir), award winning writer/director Shola Amoo (The Last Tree), BAFTA winning director David Yates (Harry Potter), BAFTA winning director Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here), Oscar winning animator Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit) and Oscar winning composer Dario Marianelli. Over 50% of the biggest box office successes since 2015 have had at least 1 NFTS graduate in a key role, and even though the NFTS graduates just 8 Cinematographers per year, alumni shoot 25% of all high end TV in the UK. The NFTS awards more scholarships and bursaries to British students, relative to the size of our student body, than almost any other educational institution in the UK.
