MFJF Day Players Program

Get on set. Get paid. Build your network.

You’ve started building experience on set. The MFJF Day Players Program helps you turn it into a career.

Our goal is simple: help junior crew across all departments find paid work on professional productions while making new contacts and getting your career off the ground.

And the best part? You won’t pay any fees unless you get paid work!

What is the Day Players Program?

Most MFJF members want to work on professional productions, feature films, and HETV dramas, but making the leap from student films and shorts to consistent paid work can feel impossible.

It’s not about you or your skillset - it’s how the industry often works. You need personal recommendations.

Many professional roles aren’t advertised and rely on the “who you know” system, where trusted crew recommend reliable junior crew for paid work. MFJF made its name in 2011 by being the first platform to advertise these hard-to-find roles, but there are even more opportunities beyond our network.

We at MFJF are using the Day Players program, working with experienced filmmaker networks, to expand the networks we can reach and help more MFJF members. Moreover, most entry level filmmakers fail to understand they are not ready for large budget production work and need to start smaller and build up their skills and experience.

That’s the barrier the Day Players Program is designed to overcome - select those that are ready to transition to larger productions and then personally recommend them, so they gain access to work that’s often hidden from view.

Here’s how we do it:

  • MFJF is partnering with professional filmmakers to create a new exclusive program for MFJF Pro Members.

  • Join a small, focused cohort, ensuring personal attention.

  • Industry professionals use their personal contacts to place you on paid work — daily, trainee, and PA roles on professional productions.

  • Participate in the program for a minimum 3-month period, giving you time to gain meaningful experience and build lasting industry connections.

  • Receive 1:1 mentoring and career guidance, helping you develop a sustainable career.

  • Attend exclusive networking events, meeting recruiters and expanding your professional network.

In short: The Day Players Program doesn’t just teach you how to get work - it opens doors that are normally closed, giving you the insider access to launch your career in film.

Key Points

1. You pay nothing until we find you work!

2. You do not pay until the production has paid you!

3. Only a limited number of participants is possible. However, every month we aim to bring on new participants into the Day Players Program. You must be an MFJF PRO Member to apply.

4. Each participant commits to work with us for at least 3 months to gain meaningful experience and build their network.

5. Our team of industry professionals personally recommend Day Players participants to their personal networks to secure work.

6. All participants receive personal mentoring and career guidance, plus access to exclusive in-person networking and recruitment events.

7. The program covers all the main film crew departments: Art; Assistant Directors; Camera; Costume; Hair and Make Up; Lighting; Locations; Production Office and Sound.

Is Day Players for me?

The Day Players Program is designed for UK-based junior crew ready to bridge the gap to consistent paid work. We will be working with a small, focused group, so everyone gets personal attention, mentoring, and the best chance of landing paid work.

We’re offering two pathways based on the MFJF Career Stages Guidelines. Primarily this program is aimed at Stage 3 Members, those who have proven they have the skills and knowledge but lack a network of contacts to progress their careers. The majority of participants for this program will be Stage 3 members with a smaller number of Stage 2 members selected for appropriate roles to their skill level.

The program covers all the main film crew departments: Art; Assistant Directors; Camera; Costume; Hair and Make Up; Lighting; Locations; Production Office and Sound. You will be asked to specify your department of choice when you apply.

Tier One — Stage 3 Members - £150 (+ vat) per month

Criteria: 10 cumulative days experience on Feature Films or HETV Drama sets.

This is for you if you have experience but need to expand your network to get regular paid work.

Tier Two — Stage 2 Members - £100 (+ vat) per month

Criteria: some professional experience or transferable skills from shorts, commercials, or other industries.

This is for you if you are focused on building credits, skills, and contacts as a stepping stone toward broader opportunities.

Limited Numbers

Of course this program can only work with a limited number of people so we can ensure its effectiveness and value. But new spaces will become available frequently as participants create their own networks to find work and leave the program allowing others to join in their place.

Use MFJF

This program is designed to work along side the other MFJF services.

If you need to boost your candidacy the MFJF Pro membership provides ongoing career support, including 1:1 mentoring, workshops, and exclusive daily entry-level jobs, to help you build experience and progress toward Stage 3 readiness.

Please read this guide for more information on the MFJF Three Career Stages

How will it work?

The Day Players Program is designed to take your Stage 3 experience and turn it into consistent paid work on professional productions allowing you to make your own network of contacts.

Application & Selection

  • Apply via the MFJF Job Board.

  • The program covers all the main film crew departments: Art; Assistant Directors; Camera; Costume; Hair and Make Up; Lighting; Locations; Production Office and Sound. You will be asked to specify your department of choice when you apply.

  • Shortlisted applicants will have a brief Zoom interview to discuss skills, goals, and so we can answer your questions before the final selection is made.

  • Final Selection: all participants will be informed of their offer to join the program.

  • Unsuccessful candidates will be notified once decisions are final. We recommend all unsuccessful candidates immediately book a 1:1 Career Advice Session with our team so we can personally advise them how to improve their candidacy for next time. You will then be in the best place to succeed when the next round of positions become available.

Onboarding & Preparation

  • A 1:1 call with an industry professional to understand your skills, career goals, and prepare a video CV to pitch you to their contacts.

  • All participants are required to sign a contract to confirm you accept the terms of the program.

  • Confirm your availability and your minimum 3-month commitment - enough time to gain meaningful experience and build your network.

  • Full access to mentoring support, helping you navigate the industry and make the most of every placement.

  • Invitations to exclusive and informal events to meet recruiters and established crew.

Payment

  • Upon securing your first paid role, you will be invoiced but are only required to pay once you’ve been paid by the production.

  • Any additional placements within that month are covered under your monthly fee; you only pay again if you secure work in a new month. Our goal is to ensure you have multiple days work each month so you make far more money!

Program Leaders

The Day Players Program leader is Alex Mill. She has been working as an AD since 2013. Alex is supported by a network of industry professionals to help manage the Program.

Alex Mill

Alex has been working as an Assistant Director in London since 2013, predominantly in film and advertising. She's worked on productions for Netflix, Marvel, Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount, and on commercials for Apple, Google, Aston Martin, Adidas, Greenpeace, and the United Nations. She's passionate about giving opportunities to people who are just starting out in the industry, providing on-set learning and mentorship that helps shape the next generation of filmmakers.

Mireia G Dalmau

As a 3rd AD Miri has worked in HETV across all budget bands in the UK, Spain and Ireland. Miri's credits include: Girl Taken (Paramount+), Frauds (ITV), Black Doves s1 (Netflix), Prime Target (Apple TV) and Great Expectations (BBC).

In addition, she has experience tutoring students from the NFTS where she guided them during prep and shoot periods of their short films.

You pay nothing unless we find you work!

Think of the Day Players Program as a career investment, not a cost - it’s completely risk-free. You pay nothing unless we find you work.

How payment works:

  • You don’t pay anything until you’ve been paid for a role secured through Day Players.

  • Upon securing your first paid role, you will be invoiced but only required to pay after the production pays you.

  • Any additional placements within that month are covered under your monthly fee; we aim to ensure you work as many days as possible each month, not just one. You only pay again if you secure work in a new month.

The fee covers:

  • Industry professionals recommending you to their personal contacts

  • 1:1 mentoring and career guidance

  • Access to exclusive networking events

  • One day on set usually pays £200+, so your fee can easily pay for itself while helping launch your career. Our aim is to get your multiple days on set each month, sometimes the whole month!

Career Stage Explainer

MFJF was launched in 2011, sadly we see lots of the same mistakes repeated over and over again by our members. To prevent this we published the MFJF Career Stage Guidelines to help our members make the right decisions. Please read the Guidelines as it is the framework we use throughout our service.

Here is a simple summary of the guidlines for Day Player applicants:

Stage 3 Members - those with some professional credits

Please apply to this program is you have:

  • 10 days cumulative experience on Feature Films or High End TV Dramas

  • This may be spread over multiple productions.

Stage 2 Members - those without multiple professional credits

Do not get disheartened if you are a Stage 2 candidate, someone with all the skills and knowledge but just needs a few more credits to show everyone you have what it takes...all is not lost, we have a pathway for Stage 2 members, read on...

This is the ultimate frustration for so many, stuck in a vicious circle of all jobs requiring experience but 'I can't get experience unless you take a chance on me'.

We get it, we understand. That is why we are offering a limited pool of Stage 2 Members their chance to experience, for the first time, set life on large budget productions.

This is not an exhasutive list, but if you have the following then experience please apply:

  • Experience in other professional sets such as: unscripted, commercials, music videos

  • Experience on multiple short films

  • Experience in other industries which hone transferable skills: hospitality; events; construction; security/police/military forces

  • Additional assets like languages, proven experience with crowds of people, working with children/young people and or high profile/VIP assistance

The roles we will place our Stage 2 candidates on will be the most junior on set, such as locking off and crowd PA. Perfect examples of experiencing set life but without the pressure or expectation.
