April's Film of the Month - Lim Yong Jun’s “Ashes in Sun”

April 2026 | Yong Jun Lim

MFJF's April Film of the Month is Lim Yong Jun’s “Ashes in Sun”.

About the Film

Ashes in Sun (阳烬) is a reflective short film exploring memory, regret, and the emotional weight of looking back on moments that can’t be returned to. Through a poetic approach to imagery and tone, the film moves between light and darkness - both literally and emotionally - reflecting on how something once comforting can become overwhelming when held onto for too long.

At its core, it’s about appreciation and loss. The people we love, the time we take for granted, and the realisation that certain moments don’t return once they’ve passed - they only remain as memory.

What’s your film career been like to date?

My love in film started after attending a local premiere of Barbarian Invasion by Tan Chui Mui in 2021, who is an indie film director from Malaysia. I knew that I was meant for the arts then, but was unsure on which direction to take. That screening ended up inspiring me to pursue a journey in film.

Ever since graduating from a film degree at University of Northampton, I’ve been working as a barista in Soho and looking for work in the industry, while self-funding my own projects including the short film that was chosen by MFJF as Film of the Month.

What challenges have you faced? How have you overcome them?

Networking. I hate it. Still trying to learn how to hold a conversation properly. Just gotta keep at it I guess.

Many of the obstacles I encounter are from within myself, and I don’t think one could overcome them completely. When things get tough, it’s important to reconnect with that sense of wonder and passion for the craft that drew you to it in the first place.

What are your career ambitions?

When I go back home, I’d like to be making films that reflect Malaysia and the people there - simple stories, but ones that feel honest and human.

I’m not completely sure of the exact path to get there yet. Right now it’s more about gaining experience, meeting people, and continuing to make work where I can. I think the plan is still forming, but I know I want to keep moving towards filmmaking in a real, sustainable way.

What tips and advice do you have for those also on a similar journey trying to establish their film careers?

If you believe in your work, you just have to keep going with it and not overthink things too much.

I know it sounds simple, but I think a lot of people (myself included) can get stuck in their own head before anything is even made or shared. You just have to make things, even if they’re not perfect.

And be comfortable with who you are - the stories you care about will usually find the right audience eventually, even if it takes time.
