October 2025 - MFJF Filmmaker of the Month - Solomon Howard

About your Film Career to date:

Well so far I’ve only really dipped my toes into the industry, having just graduated from university. But I did gain lots of experience working on camera and as a writer, director and many other roles through my degree (I studied Filmmaking at Leeds Arts), so I’d highly recommend going down that route to anyone as it’s a really great way of figuring out your voice early on in your career and having a chance to plan, shoot & see your own projects on the big screen!

I’ve also had a couple of weeks’ experience as a camera trainee on BBC 1’s upcoming show Riot Women, which was an absolute blast and an experience which really showed me how fast-paced the industry is!

What challenges have you faced? How have you overcome them?

So far I haven’t really faced a whole lot of challenges, with the biggest one probably being dealing with the job market! I’ve applied for a hell of a lot of jobs since graduating, so it’s definitely been a challenge handling that kind of rejection and coming up with the most efficient way to apply for the most jobs I can per day.

What are your career ambitions? What is your plan to get there?

My main ambition is to write and direct feature films (how original, am I right?) and in terms of a plan for how to get there, I’m honestly just trying to do whatever I can to get a job in the industry to start off, then seeing where it takes me!

However, there are several young writers’ groups and submission pages, mainly for TV, which are out there, so these could be a good route to pursue to try and get experience as a writer or even a script-reader at a big production company.

What tips and advice do you have for those also on a similar journey trying to establish their film careers?

Honestly the advice I’d give is kind of the same advice I’m trying to follow myself! And that is: just keep applying for anything and everything, and don’t let rejections get you down. Think of the job market as a numbers game - the more you put yourself out for, the better chance you have of getting that first break. And don’t be afraid to go for the jobs you feel are out of reach or above your pay grade, you never know!

But most of all, just keep creating, whether it be scriptwriting, editing a short video together or practicing your photography, it all helps to make you feel like you still own your creative voice and freedom!
