About your Film Career to date
I have been obsessed with films and storytelling since my teens, I graduated with a BA (Hons) Degree in Film from Falmouth University in 2024 and the film I directed in my final year at Falmouth was Golden Years, a passion project that I first had the idea for when I was sixteen. Making Golden Years was a highlight of my career so far, as seeing an incredibly personal project develop from an idea to the screen (with the help of a fantastic cast and crew) was a really eye opening experience and a chance to start finding my voice as a filmmaker.
Since making Golden Years I have worked as a producer on a project that is set for release on the festival circuit later this year, as well as starting development on my next directorial project, hopefully set to shoot in 2026. I have also worked for the last year as a Media Technician for a college to gain extra experience with the more technical side of filmmaking which has been absolutely invaluable to my progression as a filmmaker. I am always looking to gain more experience and understanding of the filmmaking process as a whole!
What challenges have you faced? How have you overcome them?
The challenge I have that crops up consistently is imposter syndrome, which seems to be a common challenge that many up and coming artists are dealing with. For me personally the idea of bringing something into the world and it being rejected by audiences is a looming fear;as my work tends to come mostly from a personal place. I find that overcoming this has taken time and I'm not one hundred percent there yet, but generally seeking support from collaborators and friends is really a step forward for me. Whenever I am developing ideas, I tend to pitch them to the people around me whether it’s my girlfriend or other friends also starting out their filmmaking journeys, and usually the feedback I receive is reassuring enough to keep myself motivated and the self-doubt at bay. Keeping a trusted group of people around me who support me but also give me completely honest feedback is key to overcoming this challenge personally!
What are your career ambitions? What is your plan to get there?
My career ambition is to carry on creating personal projects and building up experience directing and building up a portfolio of short films with the hopes of making a feature film someday. For my development to one day reach this goal, I am trying to constantly learn as much as I can on as many aspects of the filmmaking process as possible;as well as building up a network of incredibly creative people who I enjoy working with!
What tips and advice do you have for those also on a similar journey trying to establish their film careers?
The best advice I received is that everyone's career is completely different, so try to resist the temptation to compare yourself to others. Not everyone is at exactly the same place in their career and not everyone has the same circumstances, that is okay. Your journey as a creative is completely unique.
Networking is also key, building up a group of like-minded people on the same journey is not only a great way to make friends, but also a great way to find professional collaborations. Whether it's online or in person the more people you connect with, the more chances and opportunities for collaboration and expanding your own skills!
