August 2025 - Filmmaker of the Month - Elisha Assaf
August 2025 | Elisha Assaf
I began my creative journey in photography and fine art, which naturally led me into film, then set design, and eventually into stop motion. During my Art Foundation course, I specialized in animation, which opened the door to pursuing a degree in animation. It was there that I discovered a passion for 3D computer animation.
For my final year project, Baby Paper, I focused on creating 3D computer-generated environments a process I thoroughly enjoyed and found creatively fulfilling. Alongside my studies, I gained hands-on experience in live-action filmmaking by working as an assistant on several short film projects. This allowed me to balance screen-based work with practical, on-set collaboration.
I’m passionate about both live-action and animated storytelling, and now, having completed my degree, I’m eager to move into a role that combines all of my skills and interests, bridging the gap between digital and physical worlds.
What challenges have you faced? How have you overcome them?
Transitioning from creating mostly physical artwork to working entirely in digital media was a significant shift for me. At first, my computer skills weren’t as advanced as those of my peers, which was incredibly challenging and at times disheartening. However, I was determined to improve. I dedicated a huge amount of time and effort to learning 3D software, pushing myself to reach a level where I could create work I was genuinely proud of.
What are your career ambitions? What is your plan to get there?
I'm in the process of shaping my career path after recently graduating from university. I'm passionate about continuing to create digital 3D environments, but I also deeply value the experience I've gained working on live-action film sets. Ideally, I’m looking to pursue opportunities that allow me to develop my skills in 3D while staying connected to the world of live action filmmaking.
What tips and advice do you have for those also on a similar journey trying to establish their film careers?
Keep creating! Even when I’m not working on a project, I’m constantly thinking of new ideas and writing them down. Creativity is an ongoing process, and staying open to inspiration is key. I believe in connecting with as many people as possible and embracing every opportunity that comes my way, you never know where it might lead.
