July 2025 - MFJF Film of the Month - James Crafford's 'Bonedry'

I haven’t had much industry experience yet, but I’m just about to graduate from university with a first class honours degree in film production, I’ve been writing films and making films since I was about 11, most of them weren’t great, but for every mistake I made I learnt a little more and put it into my later projects.

I’ve been interested in pretty much all aspects and departments of film and loved learning about the ins and outs of each one and I’m eager to learn even more.

What challenges have you faced? How have you overcome them?

The school I went to wasn’t very big on the arts and creative subjects and I wasn’t exposed to too much film, so everything I wanted to know I had to go and find out for myself. I have been very blessed though and had family and friends that supported my endeavours and with early things I would shoot it, would just be my mum and I filming with our phones.

What are your career ambitions? What is your plan to get there?

My big goal is to be in a position where I can have creative freedom in some aspect in the film world, preferably writing or directing, but I love being on set in any capacity and would be very grateful to be in a position where I can be on a film set for a living. I aim to just keep putting my name out there and being persistent with trying to get jobs and just keep applying for as much as I can.

What tips and advice do you have for those also on a similar journey trying to establish their film careers?

I’ve been given some pretty good advice generally for getting into a film career so far. I’ve been told that you should treat looking for a job, like a job in itself and wake up and get to work applying and being persistent. I’ve also been advised to pester a little bit and to keep your name in the back of the mind of potential employers, so if they happen to need someone to be a runner, you’ll be at the forefront of their mind.
