June 2025 MFJF Filmmaker of the Month is Lauren Greer
June 2025 | Lauren Greer
I’ve been creating short films for as long as I can remember—from family holiday videos to promotional content for local businesses. I’ve always been fascinated by how cameras can be used to tell meaningful stories and raise awareness for overlooked issues.
My passion for animals, the natural world, and diverse cultures naturally drew me toward documentary filmmaking. Films like Blackfish and Our Planet had a huge impact on me growing up, and they inspired me to pursue a career in film and camera.
I am fortunate enough to have spent some time working with a TV company and have just graduated with a diploma in film production. In addition to this I have worked on a number of independent productions as a cinematographer amongst some other roles.
What challenges have you faced? How have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I've faced as a filmmaker is self-doubt. In an industry where there’s no single right path, it’s easy to second-guess your decisions—whether it be the stories you choose to tell, or the opportunities you choose to pass up or pursue. I have learnt along the way that filmmaking doesn’t come with a clear blueprint.
However I like to remind myself that everyone’s journey is different. I've come to realise that what matters most is trusting your instincts, being open to learn, and surrounding yourself with people who challenge and inspire you!
What are your career ambitions? What is your plan to get there?
I'm an aspiring cinematographer and documentary filmmaker. I hope to get there by further refining my technical knowledge, practising my camera work and constantly improving my filmmaking ability. I would like to gain some hands-on experience as an assistant camera operator and learn from experienced professionals in the field.Another goal of mine would be to help increase female representation in the camera department of the industry.
What tips and advice do you have for those also on a similar journey trying to establish their film careers?
Talk to people! Some of the best advice I’ve received has come from simply reaching out to others in the field. It can be daunting but you’d be surprised how many people are willing to share their experiences and offer guidance.
Would you like to share your set stories, write reviews or blog about your journey into the industry? MFJF would love to hear from you!
