December Filmmaker of the Month - Piotr Wysoczanski
Tell us about your film career so far...what experience do you have? What skills have you development and how? How did you gain the knowledge you currently have?
First self-taught, then formally trained in film school, my real filmmaking experience has come from working on set. I’ve participated in small indie productions, taking on a wide range of roles from spark to director. My strengths lie in lighting and meticulous pre-production planning, with a particular passion for obsessive pre-visualisation.
What challenges have you faced? How have you overcome them?
I am a career changer, transitioning from a background in biophysics to the film industry. Starting out at this stage of life, I quickly discovered that my age and prior career are not always seen as assets. Breaking into roles like camera or lighting as a 40-year-old trainee has its challenges… I still trying to overcome those limitations…
What are your career ambitions? What is your plan to get there?
DOP. Networking.
What tips and advice do you have for those also on a similar journey trying to establish their film careers?
If I may be a bit cynical, having connections or coming from a privileged background certainly helps in this industry for more reasons than elsewhere. But on a more constructive note, persistence is key. Keep trying, network as much as possible, and build genuine relationships with people in the field. If you have the opportunity, consider applying to a school like NFTS—it’s a fantastic launching pad, though I didn’t take that route myself. Ultimately, be resilient.
